Rosa Parks Bus Art Project for Pre-K

Easy Civil Rights Craft with Teacher Prep.

Looking for a meaningful and age-appropriate way to introduce young students to important historical figures? This Rosa Parks bus art project is a simple and engaging activity designed especially for Pre-K students.

This lesson combines basic art skills with an introduction to Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement in a way that is accessible for young learners.

To celebrate Black History Month, I had a Pre-Kindergarten class assembled buses to honor Rosa Parks

I tried to replicate the original Montgomery City Transportation Bus that Parks rode on December 1, 1955, in Alabama.

I scaled it down for a simpler Pre-K art project and pre-cut the pieces.  However, older children could trace and cut out their own shapes, and this craft could easily be adapted for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students.

All pieces, and step by step visuals are below.  If interested in exact measurements, please leave a comment.

🚌 Why This Project Works for Pre-K or Kindergarten

Teaching history to very young students can be challenging, but hands-on activities help make big ideas more understandable.

This project:

  • Introduces Rosa Parks in a simple, age-appropriate way
  • Uses familiar shapes and assembly
  • Encourages fine motor skills through gluing and placement
  • Creates a visual connection to an important historical moment

For younger students, projects like this focus more on recognition and participation rather than detailed historical understanding.

🎨 What Students Practice

Even with teacher prep, students are still actively involved in:

  • Following simple directions
  • Gluing and assembling pieces
  • Recognizing shapes and placement
  • Participating in a meaningful classroom discussion

Each student creates their own version, helping them feel connected to the lesson.

✂️ Important Teacher Prep

This project does require significant prep ahead of time, especially for Pre-K learners.

Teachers will need to:

  • Pre-cut bus shapes and components
  • Prepare smaller pieces for assembly
  • Organize materials for easy student use

Having everything ready allows the lesson to run smoothly and keeps the focus on the learning experience rather than cutting skills.

🖍️ Supplies Needed

  • Pre-cut paper pieces (bus, windows, wheels, figures)
  • Glue sticks
  • Background paper
  • Optional: crayons or markers for added details

✏️ Lesson Overview (Simple Steps)

  1. Introduce Rosa Parks
Share a short, age-appropriate explanation of who she was and why she is important.
  2. Build the Bus
Students assemble the pre-cut pieces to create their bus.
  3. Add Details
Students can personalize their project with simple additions like faces or background elements.
  4. Discuss the Meaning
Keep it simple—focus on fairness, kindness, and standing up for what is right.

💡 Teacher Tips

  • Keep directions short and clear
  • Model each step before students begin
  • Pre-sort materials to save time during the lesson
  • Focus on the message, not perfection

This project works best when it’s structured and supported with clear visuals.
