What is Radial Balance?

Radial balance occurs when elements are arranged evenly around a central point—like a wheel, flower, or sun.

This concept helps students:

  • Understand symmetry in a new way
  • Explore repetition and pattern
  • Create visually organized designs

It’s a foundational concept in art that works well across multiple grade levels.

🎨 What Students Learn

In this lesson, students will:

  • Create a design centered around a focal point
  • Divide space into sections
  • Use repeating patterns to build their composition
  • Experiment with color choices and design

Even though students follow the same structure, each final artwork turns out unique.

🖍️ Supplies Needed

  • Square paper (9”x9” or 12”x12”)
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Black marker or Sharpie
  • Crayons or markers

Optional:

  • Rulers for sectioning
  • Colored pencils for more detailed designs

✏️ Lesson Overview (Simple Steps)

  1. Create the Center Point
Start by identifying the middle of the paper.
  2. Divide the Space
Draw lines from the center outward to create equal sections (like slices of a pizza).
  3. Add Patterns
Fill each section with repeating patterns such as:
    • Lines
    • Shapes
    • Dots
    • Zigzags
  4. Outline with Marker
Trace designs with a black marker to define the artwork.
  5. Add Color
Use color to enhance patterns and create contrast.

💡 Teacher Tips

  • Model a few pattern ideas before students begin
  • Encourage repetition to reinforce the concept
  • Remind students to work neatly within sections
  • Use this as an opportunity to discuss balance vs. symmetry

This lesson works well for 2–3 class periods depending on detail level.
